The integrated operation of Multi-purpose reservoirs is an intricate and delicate function, especially due to conflicting demands of irrigation and power by the Partner States. The divergent views are not only confined to irrigation releases vis-à-vis power
releases but there are also varying views regarding the irrigation releases amongst the Partner States.
The objectives to be achieved for operation of reservoirs are:-
- Filling up the reservoirs to their Maximum Water Levels at the end of filling period after meeting the full requirements of paddy, maize and other Kharif Crops and ensure better availability of water during the Rabi Crop period.
- Maximising generation to avoid spilling of water without generation in case the inflows are high.
- Resorting to controlled spilling without causing floods. Maximising generation in case of apprehension of floods during the later period i.e. reservoirs are not allowed to get filled up quickly midst heavy monsoon period to obviate the difficulties in flood
routing when the water level in the reservoir is at a higher elevation.
